Staying in Baixa, Lisbon's downtown grid

Is Baixa a good place to stay in Lisbon?

Baixa is the flat, grid-planned downtown between the river and Rossio: the easiest area for public transport, luggage and short stays, with most sights walkable. It is busy with visitors by day and quieter at night, and has fewer neighbourhood restaurants than Alfama or Chiado.

Layout

Pombaline Baixa was rebuilt on a grid after the 1755 earthquake. Rua Augusta runs from the Arco to Praça do Comércio on the river; Rossio and Figueira squares sit at the top. Four metro lines meet within a few blocks.

Who it suits

Short stays, families with strollers, anyone arriving late or leaving early, and travellers who want zero hills between their door and the main sights.

Practical notes

  • Many buildings are 18th-century with narrow stairs; check whether your apartment has a lift if that matters.
  • Street-level shops close by 20:00; for dinner walk 5 minutes up to Chiado or east to Alfama.
  • Trams, Uber and taxis are easy to catch at Praça da Figueira and Praça do Comércio.

Within 10 minutes

Praça do Comércio and the riverfront, Elevador de Santa Justa, the Lisboa Story Centre, Rossio square, and the Mercado da Figueira for groceries.
